MoJ: In 2024, Mortality in Ukraine exceeded birth rate by 2.8 times
Ukraine has the lowest birth rate in the world.
In 2024, Ukraine recorded 495,090 deaths, which exceeded the number of births (176,780) by 2.8 times, according to a report from the Ministry of Justice on the state registration of civil status acts.
The number of births decreased by 10,710 (5.7%) compared to 2023, while the number of deaths declined by only 0.2% (1,150 cases).
In the second half of 2024, the Ministry of Justice noted a slight positive trend: births increased by 1.6% to 89,020, while deaths decreased by 2.7% to 244,120.
Worst Birth-to-Death Ratios
The most unfavorable birth-to-death ratios were recorded in:
Kherson region (11:1)
Donetsk region (8.5:1)
Zaporizhzhia and Sumy regions (4.7:1)
Kharkiv region (4.5:1)
Chernihiv region (4.4:1)
Best Birth Rates
The best birth rates were observed in:
Rivne region (1.6:1)
Zakarpattia and Volyn regions (1.7:1)
Kyiv (1.8:1)
Chernivtsi region (1.9:1)
Lviv region (2:1)
As previously reported by the UOJ, in the first half of the year, 87,655 births and 250,972 deaths were registered in Ukraine – making it the country with the lowest birth rate in the world.
